II: Off the Grid is inspired by Hermann Melville’s novel Moby Dick and developed around a character, inactive to the plot. Bulkington remains a sleeping partner to the action throughout the novel, a secret member of the crew, always below deck during the entire voyage of the Pequod, the ship that bears everything. Its figure can be understood as the key to a mindset characterized by well-balanced navigation, free of purely goal-oriented thinking. A maxim can be developed from this mindset, one that bears in mind the importance of staying attentive when it comes to dealing with one’s own patterns of thinking, using mental resilience in conquering unknown territories.
The world took shape through the development of the sea chart. These early maps are striking in their often fantastic and distorted views of newly discovered lands. The sectional motif showing one side of the two-sided movement II: Off the Grid is based on their examination. When the parts are placed together, a text, organized along a fictitious geographical line, the quotation referring to Bulkington can be read on the other side.
